Three-figure bearings

MA24-08

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Measure and state a bearing using the three-figure, clockwise-from-north convention, including finding the bearing of B from A when given the bearing of A from B.

What it covers

  • The three-figure bearing convention: measured clockwise from north, always written as three digits (e.g. 007, not 7)
  • Measuring a bearing from a diagram with a protractor
  • Finding the bearing of B from A given the bearing of A from B (the reciprocal bearing, using the plus-or-minus 180 degree relationship)

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches three-figure bearings. By the end, students should be able to measure and state a bearing using the three-figure, clockwise-from-north convention, including finding the bearing of B from A when given the bearing of A from B. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
