Density: mass, volume and the direction of division

MA22-03

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Use density = mass / volume, built from the meaning of the unit rather than a memorised triangle, correctly deriving the volume of a compound or algebraic solid first where needed.

What it covers

  • Build density = mass / volume directly from the meaning of the unit g/cm3 (grams per cubic centimetre), not from a memorised triangle
  • Convert mass between kg and g correctly within a density calculation
  • Derive the volume of a compound or algebraic solid (e.g. a cube with an algebraic edge length) as the necessary first step before dividing
  • Choose the correct direction of division (mass divided by volume), and the correct operation when the formula is rearranged (e.g. mass = density x volume)
  • Finish an 'is it made of X' style question with a stated numerical comparison and conclusion, not just the calculated density

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches density: mass, volume and the direction of division. By the end, students should be able to use density = mass / volume, built from the meaning of the unit rather than a memorised triangle, correctly deriving the volume of a compound or algebraic solid first where needed. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
