Compare rates: speed, pay and unit pricing
MA22-02
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Compute and compare genuine compound rates (cost per hour, cost per person, pay per hour) to decide which of two options is better value, rather than comparing only the raw price.
What it covers
- Derive a genuine compound rate (e.g. cost per hour, cost per person, pay per hour) from two given raw quantities
- Recognise when a question requires a derived rate rather than the raw price or quantity alone
- Compare two or more options using the SAME derived rate, then state a conclusion
- Avoid premature rounding when a per-unit rate must be built from several summed costs
Key words
For: AQA GCSE 8300, Edexcel GCSE 1MA1, Eduqas GCSE C300, OCR GCSE J560
On the specification
| Board | Spec | Statement |
|---|---|---|
| AQA GCSE 8300 | R11 | Use compound units such as speed, rates of pay, unit pricing |
| Edexcel GCSE 1MA1 | R11 | Use compound units such as speed, rates of pay, unit pricing, density and pressure |
| Eduqas GCSE C300 | FR12 | Use compound units such as speed, rates of pay, unit pricing, density and pressure |
| Eduqas GCSE C300 | HR12 | Use compound units such as speed, rates of pay, unit pricing, density and pressure |
| OCR GCSE J560 | 10.01b | Use and convert simple compound units (e.g. for speed, rates of pay, unit pricing). Know and apply in simple cases: speed = distance ÷ time |
For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches compare rates: speed, pay and unit pricing. By the end, students should be able to compute and compare genuine compound rates (cost per hour, cost per person, pay per hour) to decide which of two options is better value, rather than comparing only the raw price. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
