Bounds of a calculated result (Higher)
MA07-04
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Find the upper or lower bound of a calculated quantity (such as area, density or speed) built from two rounded measurements, by choosing the correct bound of each input for the operation involved.
What it covers
- Finding the four bounds (upper and lower of each rounded input) before starting the calculation
- Choosing the correct combination of bounds to maximise or minimise a calculated quantity, for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Compound-measure contexts: area, density, speed
- Checking the final answer's precision matches what the question asked (e.g. stating that both bounds round to the same value)
Key words
For: Cambridge IGCSE 0580, Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1, OCR GCSE J560, AQA GCSE 8300, Edexcel GCSE 1MA1, Eduqas GCSE C300
On the specification
| Board | Spec | Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge IGCSE 0580 | E1.10 | Give upper and lower bounds for data rounded to a specified accuracy. |
| Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1 | H1.8A | Solve problems using upper and lower bounds where values are given to a degree of accuracy |
| OCR GCSE J560 | 4.01c | Use inequality notation to write down an error interval for a number or measurement rounded or truncated to a given degree of accuracy. Apply and interpret limits of accuracy. |
| AQA GCSE 8300 | N16 | Apply and interpret limits of accuracy |
| Edexcel GCSE 1MA1 | N16 | Apply and interpret limits of accuracy |
| Eduqas GCSE C300 | HN16 | Apply and interpret limits of accuracy, including upper and lower bounds |
For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches bounds of a calculated result (Higher). By the end, students should be able to find the upper or lower bound of a calculated quantity (such as area, density or speed) built from two rounded measurements, by choosing the correct bound of each input for the operation involved. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
