Sample size, reliability and theoretical probability language
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Explain, using correct probability language and explicit reference to sample size, why a larger number of trials gives a more reliable estimate of probability, and use frequency evidence to judge whether an event is fair or biased.
What it covers
- Reasoning that a larger number of trials gives a more reliable relative-frequency estimate of probability
- The specific examiner-required justification: reference the number of trials/sample size explicitly, not vague 'more accurate' language
- Using probability language (biased, unbiased, fair) to relate frequency evidence back to theoretical probability
- Comparing two data sets of different sizes to judge which gives the more trustworthy estimate
- Judging bias: comparing an observed relative frequency against the theoretical/expected probability and stating a conclusion with matching reasoning each time

For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches sample size, reliability and theoretical probability language. By the end, students should be able to explain, using correct probability language and explicit reference to sample size, why a larger number of trials gives a more reliable estimate of probability, and use frequency evidence to judge whether an event is fair or biased. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
