Probability scale, vocabulary and simple probability
MA34-01
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Place an event on the 0-1 probability scale using correct vocabulary, and calculate the probability of a single equally-likely-outcome event as a fraction, decimal or percentage.
What it covers
- The 0-1 probability scale: impossible = 0, evens = 0.5, certain = 1
- Basic vocabulary: outcome, event, equally likely, random, fair, biased (introduced only, not used for reliability judgements)
- Calculating P(single event) with equally likely outcomes (one die, one coin, one spinner, items from a bag) as a fraction, decimal or percentage
- The rule that a numeric probability value must always be stated, never just a mark on the scale or a word like 'likely'
Key words
For: AQA GCSE 8300, Edexcel GCSE 1MA1, Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1, Eduqas GCSE C300, OCR GCSE J560, Cambridge IGCSE 0580

For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches probability scale, vocabulary and simple probability. By the end, students should be able to place an event on the 0-1 probability scale using correct vocabulary, and calculate the probability of a single equally-likely-outcome event as a fraction, decimal or percentage. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
