Solving loci problems with combined conditions

MA24-05

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Combine two or more locus conditions into a single correctly represented region or line segment that satisfies all of them at once, including real-world placement problems.

What it covers

  • Combining two or more of: circle, parallel-strip, perpendicular bisector, angle bisector loci onto one diagram
  • Correctly identifying and marking the single region or line segment that satisfies ALL conditions simultaneously, not each one separately
  • Real-world placement problems (e.g. where something can validly be positioned)
  • Recognising when the correct final answer is a shaded AREA versus just part of a LINE

For: OCR GCSE J560, AQA GCSE 8300, Edexcel GCSE 1MA1, Eduqas GCSE C300

On the specification

BoardSpecStatement
OCR GCSE J5608.02dApply ruler and compass constructions to construct figures and identify the loci of points, to include real-world problems. Understand the term `equidistant'.
AQA GCSE 8300G2Use the standard ruler and compass constructions (perpendicular bisector of a line segment, constructing a perpendicular to a given line from/at a given point, bisecting a given angle)
Edexcel GCSE 1MA1G2Use the standard ruler and compass constructions (perpendicular bisector of a line segment, constructing a perpendicular to a given line from/at a given point, bisecting a given angle); use these to construct given figures and solve loci problems; know that the perpendicular distance from a point to a line is the shortest distance to the line
Eduqas GCSE C300FG2Use the standard ruler and compass constructions (perpendicular bisector of a line segment, constructing a perpendicular to a given line from/at a given point, bisecting a given angle); use these to construct given figures and solve loci problems; know that the perpendicular distance from a point to a line is the shortest distance to the line
Eduqas GCSE C300HG2Use the standard ruler and compass constructions (perpendicular bisector of a line segment, constructing a perpendicular to a given line from/at a given point, bisecting a given angle); use these to construct given figures and solve loci problems; know that the perpendicular distance from a point to a line is the shortest distance to the line
For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches solving loci problems with combined conditions. By the end, students should be able to combine two or more locus conditions into a single correctly represented region or line segment that satisfies all of them at once, including real-world placement problems. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
