Substituting Values into Expressions and Formulae
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Substitute positive, negative, decimal and fractional values into an algebraic expression or formula and evaluate it correctly, using brackets to protect a negative value before doing any arithmetic on it.
What it covers
- Substitute a positive integer into an expression or formula and evaluate it
- Substitute a negative value using the bracket-first technique, especially where a power is involved
- Substitute a decimal or fractional value
- Apply substitution to a formula with more than one letter, including a simple scientific-style formula

For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches substituting values into expressions and formulae. By the end, students should be able to substitute positive, negative, decimal and fractional values into an algebraic expression or formula and evaluate it correctly, using brackets to protect a negative value before doing any arithmetic on it. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
